Yukon Kuskokwim Heritage Center Research Paper

Project Date: 2005
Project Manager: Thea Agnew Bemben
Clients: Association of Village Council Presidents
Location: Bethel

Over the past four years, the Association of Village Council Presidents (AVCP) has operated the Kinguliamta Ciunerkaat program. This program has engaged villages throughout the Yukon-Kuskokwim region on a journey towards wellness and self-determination. One of the primary lessons learned from the program is the need to preserve and celebrate the region’s rich heritage. As part of their strategic planning, the AVCP board also identified cultural heritage preservation as a priority for the organization and requested staff to investigate creating a regional heritage center.

AVCP entered into a contract with Agnew::Beck to complete preliminary research on the concept and feasibility of a Yukon Kuskokwim Heritage Center. This report details the findings from a one-month study of community visions and goals, market trends, likely user groups and funding sources.
