Rural Outreach TripProject Date: 2005 – Present Project DescriptionIn the fall of 2004, Agnew::Beck coordinated the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority's (AMHTA) Rural Outreach Trip to Southeast Alaska. This trip had two principal goals. The first was to give an opportunity for state policy makers to visit and gain firsthand knowledge of issues and life in rural Alaska communities. The second goal was to work with rural community leaders to explore opportunities for services in their area. Visitors to communities included Alaska Mental Health Trustees and staff, state legislators and aides, representatives from state administrative agencies, and the four Trust-related planning boards. Through this trip, assistance has been offered to many communities in the region on projects ranging from facility planning to educational enrichment to improvements in respite care. The 2005 Rural Outreach Trip took place on October 4th, 5th and 6th. The trip’s format included an initial orientation in Fairbanks, followed by small group travel to one of several rural communities in the Tanana Chiefs Conference region for a day and a night. These included: Nenana, McGrath, Galena, Nulato, Holy Cross, Kaltag, Tok, Tanacross, Tetlin and Eagle. Travel was additionally planned to Minto, due to a village funeral however, was postponed. While the visitors were in their host communities, they met with community leaders such as elders, tribal council members, other government officials, social service and behavioral health providers. Trip participants then traveled back to Fairbanks to discuss what they learned in the communities they visited and discussed the ways in which the needs of Alaska’s rural communities can best be met. The debriefing document posted below provides a summary of reports that were made at the October 6th debriefing. Follow up on the issues reported in this document will be provided by Agnew::Beck through its Rural Technical Assistance contract with the Mental Health Trust and also, where appropriate, by individuals participating in this year’s trip.
