Business Planning for Non-Consumptive Tourism Ventures: Workshop & Workbook

Project Date: 2002
Project Manager: Chris Beck
Client: Alaska Village Initiatives
Location: Dillingham, Kodiak, Ketchikan, Bethel, Fairbanks

The goal of this project was to create a workbook and facilitate training sessions to equip Native Corporations, communities and businesses with the tools to run successful tourism operations. While rural Alaska hosts significant amounts of tourism activity, on balance, rural communities and businesses have received relatively few jobs, revenues or other benefits from this activity.

Agnew::Beck's role in this project was one part of the larger effort by Alaska Village Initiatives to promote the concept of Private Lands Wildlife Management (PLWM). The specific goal of the PLWM initiative is to help rural communities take greater advantage of Native land holdings. A broader, more ambitious goal was to help rural community leaders and residents shape tourism growth so these groups have more control over the character, location and magnitude of tourism growth.

Agnew::Beck facilitated five one-day workshops as part of a three-day training for village corporation board members and other rural residents.
