Bring the Kids Home Summit Facilitation

Project Date: 2007, 2008
Project Manager: Melissa Rodriguez
Client:State of Alaska, Division of Behavioral Health
Locations: Statewide

The State of Alaska, Division of Behavioral Health annually holds several Bring the Kids Home (BTKH) Regional Summits throughout the state. In 2003, the State of Alaska Division of Behavioral Health and the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority, as well as a number of other stakeholders embarked on the BTKH initiative. The initiative aims to move youth from institutionalized psychiatric care, often out of state, into home and community-based care.

The goals include: 1) Build, develop, and sustain the community-based and residential capacity to serve children with all intensities of need within the service delivery system in Alaska; and 2) Develop an integrated, seamless service system in Alaska that will allow children and youth to be served in the most culturally competent, least restrictive setting, as close as possible to home as determined to be safe and appropriate. As part of this initiative, a total of $21,565,000 has been dedicated in FY08 in order to implement strategies including workforce development, coordination with school-based services, facilities development, enhanced "gate keeping," and increased home and community-based services around the state.

Agnew::Beck facilitated five regional summits in an effort to individualize the BTKH initiative for the needs of different communities across the state. The regional summits will be used to help regions identify barriers, resources, solutions, priorities, and persons willing to take lead roles in their communities to service children with Severe Emotional Disturbance as close to their homes as possible. The summits were coordinated with community planning efforts to identify short and long-term solutions that can be accomplished accordingly, with funding and without.

Regional summits took place across the state; locations and dates are listed below. Reports are being compiled from the most recent summits:

  • Fairbanks - April 30th, 2007
  • Juneau - May 4th, 2007
  • Kenai - May 11th, 2007
  • Bethel - June 1, 2007
  • Kodiak - June 22, 2007
