Prince of Wales Behavioral Health System Planning ProjectProject Date: 2009 to present Accomplished: POW Behavioral Health Needs AssessmentIn 2009, the Prince of Wales Health Network, committed behavioral health providers, stakeholders and community members from the Prince of Wales Island community came together to participate in a needs assessment and strategic planning process for behavioral health services on Prince of Wales Island. In the first year, a thorough needs assessment was completed, based on input from stakeholders throughout the island, as well as independent data collection and analysis. Read the full Needs Assessment Report! Thanks to all who participated in making this assessment as complete and useful as possible. Now, there’s more to do. Next Step: Community Coalition Building and Strategic Planning for Behavioral HealthIn the second half of 2010 and into 2011, using the needs assessment as a guide, stakeholders will come together to participate in lively, influential discussions about how to address the needs in our communities and encourage health and wellness on Prince of Wales Island. These discussions will lead to recommended actions at the local and state levels. The discussion will also help identify steps to enhance behavioral health services on Prince of Wales Island and reduce the impacts of behavioral health issues for individuals and communities. The Strategic Plan for Behavioral Health for Prince of Wales Island will be practical, and based on the needs identified in the region. Be a part of the Strategic Planning Process – Be a part of the solution! Sept. 29 Capacity Building Workshop in CraigWednesday, September 29th, 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The Capacity Building workshop will offer interested stakeholders the opportunity to discuss community capacity on the island, and ways to build that capacity. Armed with data collected through the Assessment phase of this project, we will also prioritize issues the group will focus on during the Planning phase. Planning is expected to occur in late fall or early winter of this year.
Join the Stakeholder Workgroup:A Stakeholder Workgroup is forming right now to start work this fall. Sign up now to participate in this workgroup, and to recommend others who could make valuable contributions. The workgroup will meet once in September for a Community Coalition Building Workshop, and then once more later in the fall for a Strategic Planning work session. Both sessions will take place on Prince of Wales Island. The time commitment is minimal, but the impact of your participation is profound. Please contact us to let us know that you are interested or to recommend others. The strength of the Strategic Plan comes from YOUR participation. Thank you for taking the time to contribute to this important effort! And, there’s one more thing you can do … How you can Help Now: Host a Meeting This SummerHelp build momentum now by discussing the findings of the Needs Assessment report in your community or with interested co-workers over coffee. It’s easy to organize an informal discussion during a lunch break, during a community meeting or after work. Everything you’ll need can be found in our Meeting in a Bag kit, which includes:
Download this kit, invite your co-workers and neighbors, and then let us know the results of your discussion. This is a great way to collect ideas and input from people who may not be able to participate in the Community Coalition Building Workshop and Strategic Planning work session, but who still have important insights to share. It is also a good way to think about the particular needs in each community and what the needs are island-wide. For more information, please contact:
