Big Lake Comprehensive Plan UpdateProject Date: January 2008 – Present Project DescriptionThe Matanuska-Susitna Borough has teamed with Agnew::Beck Consulting to facilitate public participation process for an update of Big Lake's 1996 Community Comprehensive Plan. That year, a major wildfire burned more than 37,000 acres in the area destroying 400 homes and cabins. Since then, residents have been rebuilding. And, as the resident population in the Mat-Su Borough has boomed, the number of permanent residents and second-home owners in Big Lake has also grown as more and more people make it their home. Big Lake and the surrounding trails and lakes are popular recreation destinations, and residents and visitors recognize the need to address water-quality issues. In addition, the town's center is becoming a gathering place, accommodating more local businesses and community facilities. As Big Lake grows, Agnew::Beck is assisting the community in charting a direction for the town as its own distinct community character continues to evolve. We know how important it is to really get to know the community and to understand the priorities and values of local people whose voices will be integrated in their updated Comprehensive Plan for their town's future.
