Big Lake Comprehensive Plan Update

Project Date: January 2008 – Present
Lead: Chris Beck
Client: Big Lake Community Council + Matanuska-Susitna Borough
Location: Big Lake

Project Description

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough has teamed with Agnew::Beck Consulting to facilitate public participation process for an update of Big Lake's 1996 Community Comprehensive Plan.

That year, a major wildfire burned more than 37,000 acres in the area destroying 400 homes and cabins. Since then, residents have been rebuilding. And, as the resident population in the Mat-Su Borough has boomed, the number of permanent residents and second-home owners in Big Lake has also grown as more and more people make it their home.

Big Lake and the surrounding trails and lakes are popular recreation destinations, and residents and visitors recognize the need to address water-quality issues. In addition, the town's center is becoming a gathering place, accommodating more local businesses and community facilities.

As Big Lake grows, Agnew::Beck is assisting the community in charting a direction for the town as its own distinct community character continues to evolve. We know how important it is to really get to know the community and to understand the priorities and values of local people whose voices will be integrated in their updated Comprehensive Plan for their town's future.

Background Information and Publications

Here are links to some suggested resources for review. Please become familiar with the plans the Borough and Big Lake have completed for the area. Hard copies are also available upon request from the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Office – Department of Planning and Land Use.

After initial Planning Team meetings occur during the start-up phase, community workshops will be scheduled, as well as an opportunity for a round of public feedback. A plan will be prepared and then presented to the Big Lake Community Council for review. Finally, the plan will be reviewed for approval at public hearings with the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Planning Commission and Assembly. Additional public and agency feedback will be invited at that time.
