Kodiak Area Native Association (KANA) Elder Long Term Care Needs Assessment

Project Date: January 2009 to present
Project Manager: Melissa Rodriguez
Client: Kodiak Area Native Association
Location: Kodiak Island

Plan Update

The Kodiak Area Native Association (KANA) received a grant from the Indian Health Service to conduct a needs assessment for Elder Long-Term Care services in Kodiak and surrounding communities. The grant will support planning and implementation of sustainable Long-Term Care services for American Indians and Alaska Native Elders. KANA strives to support the development of services that respond to the needs of its community members and to ensure that they advocate for Elders and their families.

The KANA Elder Care Long Term Care Needs Assessment Report (completed September, 2009) summarizes the Long Term Care Service Delivery System in the KANA region and makes recommendations and outlines priority needs identified by elders and caregivers.

Project Description

Visit the project website: www.KANAElderCare.org

The goal of this two-year project is to understand and document the needs of Kodiak’s Elders and their caregivers and to use this information to inform the development of future programs and services as part of a broader vision for Elder Long-Term Care. It is critical that the development of Long-Term Care services be well-grounded in an assessment of need based on population demographics and rates of functional impairment. Long-Term Care services should be acceptable to elders and their families and consistent with community values in their implementation. The services should be a part of an overall vision and plan for a Long-Term Care system to support Elders and their families.

Agnew::Beck is helping to assess existing services, facilities and Long-Term Care options available to Elders in the region. We're paying special attention to how Elders and their families are being served within each community and identifying any gaps in those services and ways to enhance the Long-Term Care service continuum.

The long-term planning process hinges on meaningful involvement by Elders, their families and caregivers and providers to provide the direction needed to gain a better understanding of what assistance, approaches and strategies will best meet their needs. The Kodiak Elder Care Needs Assessment process seeks to find practical, achievable ways to improve or build upon available services.

The work of this first year will result in a Kodiak Elder Care Needs Assessment Report which will launch KANA's Elder Care initiative. KANA aims to offer facilities and services in Kodiak which are founded on Alaska Native cultural values and which support families so Elders can live healthy lives, as independently as possible.

The Kodiak Area Native Association was formed in 1966 as a nonprofit corporation providing health and social services for the Alaska Natives of the Koniag region, which includes the City of Kodiak and six Alaska Native villages: Akhiok, Karluk, Old Harbor, Ouzinkie, Port Lions, and Larsen Bay.
