Seward Convention Center

Project Date: 2006-2007
Project Manager: Chris Beck
Client: City of Seward
Location: Seward

Project Description

Agnew::Beck worked with the University of Alaska Center for Economic Development (UACED) to prepare a report that investigates the financial outlook for a conference facility to be included as one portion of the proposed Mary Lowell Center in Seward.

The Mary Lowell Center is planned as a collaborative project of three agencies: the National Park Service, the US Forest Service and the City of Seward. The proposed conference facility is designed to offer capacity for events of up to 300 people seated for a meal. The proposed facility will offer a flexible, high quality space, with a range of communication and presentation equipment. It will serve local community users, as well as provide space for regional, statewide and specialty national events and conferences.

Like the great majority of publicly owned and operated conference facilities, this facility is not intended, on its own, to be a money maker. The economic value of conference centers is their ability to draw visitors into the community, particularly during non-summer months, creating demand for local dining, accommodations, retail and other local businesses.

The report investigates operation costs and projected demands for use and revenues associated with the City of Seward’s portion of the planned facility and presents conclusions regarding the facility’s financial prospects.
