Nulato Comprehensive Plan
Project Date: 2007 to 2008
Project Manager: Ellen Campfield Nelson
Client: City of Nulato
Location: Nulato
Project Description
The City of Nulato
updated its Comprehensive Plan using a mini-grant from the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development. Agnew::Beck was selected to assist Nulato in this process.
Nulato is located in the Nulato Hills, on the west bank of the Yukon River about 35 miles downstream of Galena, and 310 air miles from Fairbanks. Other communities in the vicinity include Koyukuk and Kaltag.
In May 2007 the community held the first Community Workshop, which was well-attended and lively. Many strong goals and ideas came out in the community’s discussion, including: combining efforts with nearby communities to build a hydro-electric power plant serving four area villages; creating an Athabascan immersion program in the school; and documenting changes in the natural environment – possibly due to climate change – that affect subsistence resources and practices.
One very clear message from the Workshop was the high value placed on the subsistence lifestyle by Nulato residents. Hunting, trapping, fishing, waterfowl harvest, berry picking and other subsistence activities are the most important part of life in Nulato. The area known as Kaiyuh (within the Innoko National Wildlife Refuge) is a traditional subsistence area well-loved and heavily-used by locals. Protecting and ensuring access to subsistence resources was clearly the highest priority of the plan.
