Prince William Sound Stories
Project Date: 2009 to 2011
Project Manager: Tanya Iden, Chris Beck
Client: U.S. Forest Service
Location: Prince William Sound
Project Description
Agnew::Beck assisted the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and their partner Alaska Geographic with conducting public participation and outreach for the Prince William Sound Stories project. Project partners initiated the project with the understanding that:
- PWS is a particularly wonderful place; well-loved for good reason.
- Tourism and recreation activity continue to grow in PWS; the impacts of this growth are positive and negative.
- PWS has been studied as intensively as any marine region in the world, in part due to the oil spill, yet public knowledge of the results of this research is limited.
- Collaboration is required to manage and support the continued recovery of the Sound's resources.
The goal of this project was to help a broad and diverse audience conserve, enjoy and understand the Sound through sharing stories. Agnew::Beck worked primarily to organize and facilitate a series of community work sessions among communities, agencies and organizations familiar with the Sound and that have a role in its past and future. Community meetings were held in five Prince William Sound (PWS) communities and Anchorage to kick-off the Stories project and gather story ideas. Stories were are still being compiled into a web-based archive, which is still in development.
Community Engagement included:
- Documenting and sharing stories about the Sound, and the voices of those who live in and use the area.
- Increasing public understanding about the Sound's resources, including those still recovering from the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
- Helping to conserve the natural and cultural resources of the Sound and contribute to the continued restoration of those still recovering from the oil spill.
- Promoting sustainable economic health.
- Connecting people to the Sound and foster appropriate recreation and tourism activities.
