Business Plan for the Southwest Alaska Vocational and Education Center (SAVEC)

Project Date: 2007
Project Manager: Thea Agnew Bemben
Client: Southwest Alaska Vocational and Education Center (SAVEC)
Locations: King Salmon, Alaska

The Southwest Alaska Vocational & Education Center (SAVEC) is a private not-for-profit training organization located in King Salmon, Alaska. The development of not-for-profit vocational training schools has dramatically increased over the years within the state of Alaska in order to address the growing labor shortages in the state and region. Other than the University System and Alaska Vocational Technical Center (AVTEC), the State of Alaska provides limited to no funding to vocational institutions (with the exception of training grants), and there is currently no working model for the development and sustainability of a regional vocational and technical system, requiring that many centers develop a self-sustaining model.

With the regional economy continuing to be volatile, the demand for services offered by SAVEC will become increasingly important. Despite the value SAVEC provides to the area, funding for expanded (or even continuing) SAVEC operations is far from certain.

In light of these opportunities and challenges, Agnew::Beck is working with the board and staff to develop a business plan that leads to growth and sustainability of SAVEC, allowing it to serve the needs of Southwestern Alaska.
