Portage Creek Planning

Project Date: 2006
Project Manager: Ellen Campfield Nelson
Client: Portage Creek Village Council
Location: Portage Creek

The Bristol Bay village of Portage Creek is located at the mouth of Portage Creek, a tributary of the Nushagak River, 29 miles southeast of Dillingham. This site was used by Yup'ik Eskimos as an overnight summer camp. Portage Creek was so named because it was used to portage boats from the Nushagak River to the Kvichak River. In this way, travelers could avoid the open waters of Bristol Bay and the long trip around Etolin Point. The village was permanently settled in 1961 by some families from Koliganek and other villages up the Nushagak River. Since then, year-round populations have been relatively unstable, though local families continue to reside and practice subsistence in and around the village.  More recently, sport fishing activity has been on the rise in the area, particularly during the June and July king season.

Portage Creek Comprehensive Plan

Agnew::Beck worked with the community of Portage Creek to prepare their comprehensive plan based on the local values and vision of Portage Creek residents, tribal members and landowners.

Portage Creek Long-Range Transportation Plan

In May 2006, Agnew::Beck Consulting and Bristol Environmental & Engineering Services Corporation were hired to assist Portage Creek in preparing and developing a Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), Indian Reservation Roads (IRR) Inventory Update. This plan is designed to enable Portage Creek to gain resources to plan for and develop needed transportation improvements.  Assistance in this planning effort was provided by BBNA, Choggiung Limited and Bureau of Indian Affairs.
