Aleknagik Comprehensive Strategic Development Plan

Project Date: 2005
Project Manager: Ellen Campfield Nelson
Client: The City of Aleknagik
Location: Aleknagik

Project Description

Aleknagik is located in the Bristol Bay region of southwest Alaska. This region like many in Alaska, is in a state of profound economic and social transition. While cultural traditions remain strong, mining, oil and gas development, and tourism are emerging prospects in the region. Meanwhile commercial fishing, the industry that has long been the region's primary economic engine, is in the midst of major challenges and restructuring. In this context there is a tremendous need for community planning, to help villages clarify their own goals, preserve their values and benefit from development.

Agnew::Beck Consulting worked with the residents of Aleknagik to update their Comprehensive Strategic Development Plan. Meetings with the planning team were held to gather existing information about village issues and prepare the initial draft of the plan. The draft comp plan was available for community review and comment durring the community workshops.

Project goals included:

  • Prepare a plan that documents village opportunities and values, sets goals, and uses this information to define priorities for new projects and programs.
  • Prepare a plan that meets the requirements of funders, such as the Denali Commission, who require a community plan as a condition for project funding.
  • Engage the full community in agreeing on the underlying values and priority actions for the future, to give direction on priorities to local and regional governing organizations.
  • Give the community greater control over its destiny, and a stronger position working with parties from outside the community, such as government agencies and large private businesses.
  • Help improve economic prospects - increase the odds that children can find decent work and continue to live where they grew up.
  • Help sustain cultural traditions, subsistence, history and culture.
  • Improve community facilities and services.
  • Improve community governance – help find better ways to communicate and make community decisions.
  • Help prepare a plan that is created, owned and used by local people to steer the future course of your community.
