Anchorage Parks + Recreation 2009 – 2014 Strategic Plan Update

Project Date: 2009
Project Manager: Shelly Wade
Location: Anchorage + Vicinity

Project Description

In 2009, Agnew::Beck is helped the Municipality of Anchorage Parks and Recreation department update their 2005-2009 Strategic Plan. Through a series of community meetings and a community survey, the Parks and Recreation department gained valuable insight and feedback about needed improvements to the Anchorage parks and trail system.

The Parks and Recreation Department manages more than 11,000 acres of parkland in 224 parks with 250 miles of trails, 110 athletic fields, 80 playgrounds, five indoor pools, two recreation centers, three outdoor recreation centers and various other facilities and amenities. As part
of the strategic planning process, Agnew::Beck developed an innovative community outreach campaign that worked toward gaining insight
and guidance from Anchorage’s diverse population of park users.

The campaign included a combination of interviews with key community leaders, presentations and attendance at community organizational meetings, in-park and recreation facility interviews with recreationists, and district meetings. Additionally, Agnew::Beck created an online presence for the project, including a 5-question electronic survey and a Facebook page. The strategic plan update will include a synthesis of all community feedback and will act as the Parks and Recreation Department’s action plan for the next five years.
