"We all go together."
Please Support the Southern Sudanese American Community Association
Fund-raiser, Oct. 18
Learn about your Sudanese neighbors at the Oct. 18 fund-raiser for Anchorage’s Southern Sudanese American Community Association. Dobuol, Bajek, Panom and others will share their stories about their flight from Sudan in an effort to raise awareness and funds for their fledgling nonprofit organization. Support your neighbors Saturday, Oct. 18, 3-4 p.m. at Catholic Social Services’ meeting room near the corner of 20th Avenue and Bragaw (3701 East 20th Ave.). The group will also show a documentary film about Sudanese refugees following the talk.
The nonprofit organization is dedicated to helping Sudanese refugees (and other African refugees) in Alaska who have made harrowing journeys to escape war and genocide in their homelands. Hundreds of refugees from Sudan have made their way to Anchorage, with the aim of working toward their dream of earning a livelihood for their families in a peaceful place. They care for each other fiercely. The group watches over each other’s children while adults help one another learn English and find jobs, adequate housing and transportation.
“No one goes alone,” head organizer Bajek Deng said. “We all go together,” he added, explaining how the group aims to ensure that families thrive in their new community.
"If I support my people, they'll help each other. If I learn something new, I want to show them too," Bajek said. SSACA connects refugees with the tools to make a new home here in Alaska and to serve others with their skills, professions, culture and strong sense of community.
